"Patriot Games" scripter Peter Iliff is to write and direct "Point Break 2," a 20 years later sequel to the surfing crime thriller that he co-wrote in 1987 and was a hit for Largo Entertainment in 1991 reports Variety.

The $20 million-$30 million new film will be set in Southeast Asia and uncover the fate of the surfers` leader Bodhi who was supposedly killed by a giant wave.

Action follows a surfer-turned-SEAL on the trail of a criminal gang. Locations being scouted include Indonesia and Singapore, and production schedule sees lensing starting by the end of current year with delivery for late 2008.

Surfer-turned-SEAL??????????? Sounds like an absolute pile of s***e to me.

Every time I assume that Hollywood has run out of ideas and has to resort to remakes or sequels, I try and stay optimistic and think that there is some talent out there, but then something like this comes along and that optimism just evaporates.

How old would Bodhi be now - in his 40s?

Yeah, me too, but $20m is far too expensive for a film destined only for TV screens.

ComingSoon.net learned at the American Film Market (AFM) today that shooting for Point Break 2 will begin mid-2008 in Southeast Asia. The sequel will be financed and executive produced by Singaporean company RGM Entertainment. It will be written and directed by Peter Iliff, who also wrote the first movie.

Point Break 2 picks up from where the original film left off more than 15 years ago. The story will revolve around an ex-professional surfer who enlists in the US Navy and is recruited to track down a criminal gang based in Southeast Asia. The audience will also discover the fate of Bodhi (Patrick Swayze), the surfers` charismatic leader who was swallowed by a giant killer wave in the final scene of Point Break. Did he really die?

The follow-up is budgeted at $20-30 million.

"I wrote `Point Break` in 1987 when I was still a struggling writer waiting at tables in Malibu," Iliff said earlier this year, "`Point Break` was the turning point and it made my screen writing career. 20 years later, I`m thrilled to have been given the opportunity by RGM Entertainment to write the sequel and to make my directorial debut with `Point Break 2.`"

Outrageous.

big bump, not a sequel, or a remake, I guess a reboot, inspired by the original...

looks like it could be a lot of fun, like the original.
