Hey, it looks better than RoboCop 3!

In fairness, it doesn`t look that terrible.

When I originally saw the cast with Joel Kinnaman I was thinking terrible career move (as like him in The Killing), but when Gary Oldman, Samuel L Jackson and Michael Keaton joined thought I`d give it a bit of benefit of doubt.

Amazing cast, looked really really good until 1 minute into the trailer. :(

I really hope it's not terrible, but I'm with Gareth on this one based on that. The original is such a great film for so many reasons, this one just looks like popcorn fodder.

It looks like it's going to be more of a straight-ahead action film, rather than the satire that was Verhoeven's original. The two can co-exist and if the remake prompts Fox to release a remastered version of the original on Blu-ray, well I'm all for it!

Is the current UK release not the director's cut? The print looks good to me:

It is the DC, but it doesn't look very good. It's a really old master that has been filtered, has clumpy grain and a number of artefacts. It looked okay in 2007 when HD was new and shiny, but these days it just doesn't cut it. Th guy who mentioned The Terminator in the comments has it spot on, especially as both discs were early MGM MPEG-2 encodes.

I don't think the current blu-ray release is the Director's Cut. I remember buying it but I didn't think it was as good as the DVD I had, so I traded it back in. I have the original Trilogy boxset on DVD, and that has the Director's Cut and Theatrical release plus so many extras, I'm not getting rid of it!

As for this remake, I want to see it, because I love Robocop so much, but I really do think that the soul of the movie, that special Verhoeven touch, will have been lost in the gloss.

It's definitely the director's cut.

I'll await your opinion. :) I love the original, it's such a great mix of 80s corporate greed, state corrupt by capitalism, some wonderful quotes, and always loved the way Verhoeven deals with Murphy's realisation with what he is. So much more subtle than the trailer for the new one looks. :/

Perhaps I'll wait for a remastered BR release then, I'd buy that for a dollar.
