For those with Shrek 2

Chris Gould (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 21st December 2004, 12:12

I`ve got the R3 release and just noticed that one of the King`s lines has been changed, even though the rest of the soundtrack is as per the R1 etc. He used to say his old crusade wound was acting up, now it says old hunting wound. This is just before he goes for a ride with the Fairy Godmother. I`m not particularly bothered by a one word substitution, but I`m curious as to whether this has been changed on all versions. Your experiences please!

R2 says hunting and the subs do too.
Other version I have (not sure of region but think it`s R1 ;) ) says crusade and subs do too.

Random. I wonder why just this one word was substituted for the R3 release? Kind of screws up the Fawlty Towers joke. Ah well, it was cheap (in fact it was free)!

I think it`s our old friend political correctness creeping in. Use of the word `crusade` might offend some muslims.. You may recall that Bush had to stop using the word `crusade` in his descriptions of what he would do to gain revenge on Bin-Laden and followers because it was causing offence to some Arab countries.

Before anyone says `can`t they take a joke? - these events were nearly a thousand years ago` etc and yet another thread is derailed into a political discussion, the reason for the sensitivity is that the phrase has been repeatedly used by Europeans and Americans in contexts where the West has bullied to get its own way. It`s a phrase that Westerners should accept causes offence.

FFS it`s just a film. Anyway, the crusade line remains in more than one version of the film (including the R1). I just found it odd that the R3 release would have this alteration considering the target region.

Could it be that `hunting wound` would only be relevent to us Brits, as some of the characters voices are different for the Brit version? Fox hunting would not really go down that well in the US version seeing as they don`t do such things. Therefore the R3 version may be based on the Brit release. Is Jonathan Ross credited on it? Just a thought. ;)

The R3 version is identical to the R1 apart from this one line AFAIK - Joan Rivers and Larry King are in it and it has the infamous headbutt!

Indeed. The crusade line was funnier anyway because of old Basil`s war wound in FT. It was no doubt changed for some stupid politically correct reasons, but I fail to see why Hong Kong got the change.

Because believe it or not there are a parts of R3 where muslims are in the majority.

I think you`re reading too much into my post (altough I admit it wasn`t phrased particularly well). My point was that they very rarely alter anything from the R1 releases in R3. In fact, Spider-Man 2 and Shrek 2 are the only major studio R3 releases that I`ve seen to have been altered. It`s still a stupid alteration though.
