Review of Bachelor, The

Introduction

The Bachelor is a remake of 1920’s Buster Keaton classic “Seven Chances”. Unfortunately this movie is far from a classic. Whilst the plot is a good cue for slapstick and humour, the screenplay produced here is poor. The dialogue is bland and the narration from Chris O’Donnell is even worse. In fact, for a romantic comedy much of the film is rather bitchy and paints a dreary picture of marriage and love. O’Donnell fails to carry the comedy off well enough, although I’m sure many females will enjoy his ‘romantic’ side. His character is in fact quite dislikable – ruthless and cutting.

However, there are some brighter moments and Rene Zellweger, as always, plays the Meg Ryan ‘sweet but funny blonde’ role to a tee. Half-decent for a ‘chick flick’, which the film surely is judging by the cover blurb (“The gorgeous O’Donnell’s perfect").

Video

This is a very good transfer by New Line, who rarely disappoint. The anamorphic picture is clear and crisp throughout the film.

Audio

A good 5.1 mix is provided, although what you will hear is mostly dialogue. But although your speaker system will not be pushed much, the mix is always professional.

Features

Just a trailer and Cast and Crew Bios (which are actually well done). That’s it.

Conclusion

Well, the film is not particularly inspiring, but if you want 98 mins of brainless ‘fun’ then go for it. Just don’t expect a masterpiece.
As for the DVD, the disc is very well made, although lacking in extras (lack of source material?). New Line have done a good job. Shame about the screenwriter.
