Review for WWE Clash of Champions 2020
This is probably one of the first times that I don't have to complain about the lack of secondary belts on a PPV. At Clash of Champions (an offshoot of the old Night of Champions concept) every championship is up for grabs and despite the Smackdown Tag Belts being relegated to the Kickoff show (and for some bizarre reason missed out here altogether) this is one of the few times when every single belt is represented.
The show starts with the Triple Threat Ladder Match for the Intercontinental Championship between Jeff Hardy, AJ Styles and Sami Zayn which will probably go down as one of the best matches of the year. I was stunned by this match and it is such a shame that it was not for one of the world titles as this could have easily been a main event match and because of this it does feel as though every single other match has to live up to just how good the match is. All three work well with each other and the sneaky antics by Sami Zayn were just the icing on the cake.
The two Women's belts were unfortunately a little lacklustre the WWE Raw Women's Championship between Asuka and Zelina Vega felt a little off and maybe it was because Zelina has been a manager for so long I had almost forgotten that she could wrestle. This wasn't an awful showing, just nothing special. Later Asuka came to challenge Bayley for her Smackdown belt and despite the match being a little short it was simply just for the build up of the return of Sasha Banks.
The WWE United States Championship match between Bobby Lashley and Apollo Crews could have been great and really needed a stipulation for it to mean a bit more. Instead it just felt a bit boring and again nothing special.
The WWE Raw Tag Team Championship between The Street Profits and Andrade and Angel Garza was great and I really like how these two teams worked with each other. There was a part of me that wished they had combined this and the Raw Women's match in a 'Winner Take All' stipulation to make it a bit more interesting.
The Ambulance Match for the WWE Championship between Drew McIntyre and Randy Orton was exactly the kind of off the wall insane that I expected. Both work really well together and I have really enjoyed the work of both over the last few months. The special appearances of a number of people was great and it is a shame that they didn't include the aftermath of this on this disk too.
Finally we have the WWE Universal Championship match between Roman Reigns and Jey Uso. Now, it should be noted that these two are legitimately cousins and so this makes the whole feud that went into this match all the more interesting and enjoyable. I knew going in that WWE were not going to keep swapping the world title. I also knew they would not be putting one of their main belts around the waist of someone who is known for being a lower-midcard tag wrestler... BUT... if there was ever a time for WWE to shake things up a bit, it would be now and I was stunned by how great this match was. My only real issue is that it felt that Roman was a little too vocal and the more he spoke the less intimidating he became and it felt a bit forced at times. That being said, this was an amazingly, emotional match with a fantastic ending.
Clash of Champions was a fantastic PPV and it is very rare that you hear me saying that. I would recommend this for the Ladder match alone, but the two World title matches push for attention too. I am glad that all the belts got a showing and I only wish this was a consistent thing as it is very rare that we see the IC and US belts on the same show. This is possibly one of the best WWE PPV's I have seen in a long time and even the things are a bit lacklustre are still enjoyable and watchable and so this is definitely a PPV to check out.
