Review for Sarah and Duck
Sarah and Duck is a cheerful animation featuring a little Green-hatted girl called Sarah and her loyal companion Duck. Together they go on various adventures, all simplistic, all non-threatening with no conflict, but with a positive feeling throughout. Adventures include having breakfast with a rainbow, baking a cake, planting seeds and looking after The Scarf Lady's Donkey. These stories are all narrated by the wonderful Roger Allam, who gives a very classic feel to the show.
As you can tell from the above this is a show for the CBeebies audience. This is probably not a show that a child above the age of maybe six will enjoy. The characters are well defined and cheerful looking. It's actually nice to not watch something done in CGI for a change. The stories are simple told in six-seven minutes episodes and though not much happens in them, they are entertaining enough.
The interactions between Sarah, Duck and the Narrator are nice and the crazy creatures that come alive to speak such as the Rainbow, Shallots or The Scarf Lady's Handbag are very entertaining. I would say we could argue that nothing happens in the show and it's almost a CBeebies version of Seinfeld, but that's just me being nitpicky. The adventures the characters go on are fun enough and will keep a child's attention for the time allowed.
One thing I would say is annoying from a Parent point of view is that after each episode it plays the credits with the annoyingly catchy 'Sarah and Duck, Sarah and Duck' theme tune and really they could have just had this at the end of the last episode. The lack of any games or extras for the children to do afterwards is a little disappointing, but for an hour of entertainment this certainly does its job.
Sarah and Duck is certainly a show that the CBeebies children will love. Though it would have been nice to have had more on the disk, the show is fun enough that it most smaller children will love it.
