    Review for Hideous Kinky

    5 / 10

Hideous is not the word I would use to describe the look of this film. You see what I did there? I'm not saying the film itself, the story, the acting which I'll come to in a second, but the way this film has been put together, filmed, scored and so on is perfect. However, this is one of the strangest and because of this most nonsensical films I have ever watched. If you asked me to explain the plot to this film I would be stumped as I really am not sure.
In embryo, English mother Julia (Kate Winslet) has taken her two children to live in Morocco and it's not really explained why she has left England. The children's father is supposed to be sending them money (which never arrives and is essentially the only consistent plot point of the film) and so she and her children are living a bare, poor existence until they encounter Bilal who begins a romance with Julia and seems to be their saviour, although as he is a street hustler, he may not be the knight in shining armour that they hoped for. Throughout all this, her children seem to be more aware of the dire straits that they are in and although I understand the idea that the mother is the care-free one, whereas the children are the ones with the common sense, it still doesn't make for an entertaining film in any way shape or form. To be honest, I'm still unsure what the message of the film is supposed to be. Is it that you can abandon everything and it will all go wrong? Is it that you never leave your pants out to dry? What was this film trying to say and whatever it was, I either missed it or it failed. As I say, creatively the film is filmed beautifully and the use of music throughout is excellent, however it is such a shame that some kind of film could not have been attached to it.
Extras are rather oddly huddled together into one selection and include a trailer, Interviews, B-roll selection which is essentially just behind the scenes footage. None of this is particulalrly spectacular and the fact it all adds up to a little under fifteen minutes makes you wonder why they bothered including it at all.
Hideous Kinky is not the worst film I have ever seen, but it's certainly not the best. I am struggling to think of what the film is supposed to be and that is never a good sign.
