Diving straight into last week's reviews, let us begin with Naruto Season 7: Part 2. That's three more discs of filler material, although you probably knew that. Yup, poor Naruto is still at a loose end, despite the fact that his friend and rival Sasuke has teamed up with Orochimaru and turned to the dark side, and despite the fact that the criminal Akatsuki group want Naruto's 9-tailed fox abilities for their own purposes. Our orange anoraked hero still finds the time to help out a half-fish half human girl, go hunting for treasure, play tag with a ninja postman, and babysit. Well you have to do something to keep busy while waiting for the next instalment of your manga. Click the review to be underwhelmed.

I needed to boost my intellect a tad, so I tackled the next Patlabor movie, and partook of the Patlabor 2 The Movie: Limited Collector's Edition. The sequel still has giant robots piloted by humans, it's got a sci-fi, cyberpunk edge, it's got philosophically motivated terrorists, it's got a brave police force trying to save the city, it's got politics, but not so much comedy this time around. See if that makes a difference by clicking the link. I'm in the middle of my Mamoru Oshii trilogy of reviews, and watching the re-jigged Patlabor movies has warmed me up for the big event. Next week, Ghost in the Shell 2.0.

I took a breather and let David Beckett do some work for a change. He's always taking it easy, reviewing horror movies day in and day out, like a literate metronome, ticking away the creation of attractive prose and a passion for the darker side of cinema. There may be a hint of jealousy in my typing, especially as he had the Blu-ray of Devil May Cry to review. Yes, I know, I've already reviewed the DVDs, and it's my own fault for being a technophobe stuck in the early half of the decade, but put a master of all things horror in the same room as a series about devil hunters, and you know that you're going to get a review worth reading.

Perhaps it's the fact that I finished the week with Bleach: Season 4 Part 1. Two doses of shonen in one week, and two doses of filler at that. Bleach and Naruto, five discs in all. It's a miracle I made it through with my sanity intact. Believe it! This is where Bleach departs from the manga storyline, and introduces something original. This is the start of the Bount arc, when soul-sucking immortals arrive to drive our heroes to distraction. I keep telling myself that all filler isn't bad, that anime producers without the crutch of a manga aren't necessarily devoid of originality and talent. See if this first instalment of the Bleach filler proves me right or wrong.

Beez released Patlabor 2 a couple of years ago and right now, the Limited Edition is available at a ridiculously bargain price. Otherwise it's a Manga Entertainment fest, with Devil May Cry: The Complete Series on Blu-ray out today. Naruto 7:2 and Bleach 4:1 come out next week, on the 26th of October.
